What to do if you have PTSD in Thunderstorms...

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know that almost 7% of people in the U.S. have suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

People who have PTSD may experience panic during thunderstorms. Thunderstorms and lightning can set off  a person’s alarm bells.

SERVPRO of Guelph offers these guides to coping with PTSD during storms:

The best strategy is to be prepared.

  • Take care of your emotional health. See a therapist. Learn relaxation exercises. When you feel anxious, you can relax yourself
  • Know when a thunderstorm is likely. Plan what you will do during a thunderstorm
  • Take care of your physical health. Eat a healthy diet. Get enough sleep. Do not rely on alcohol or other drugs.

During a Thunderstorm...

  • Slow down your breathing
  • Look around. Notice where you are. Notice that you are in a safe place
  • Distract yourself from the storm. Wear headphones and listen to music. Sit in a pop-up tent
  • Talk with someone you trust

All of this can be compounded if the storm generates damage to your home or office. Sometimes flooding occurs, while other times you may spring a leak. If this happens, give SERVPRO of Guelph a call and we can make the water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Damage Can Happen...

8/22/2022 (Permalink)

Fire to a bedroom in guelph Fire Damage to a bedroom in Guelph

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odour. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Guelph will determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odour.

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odour, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Choosing a Disaster Restoration Company

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Logo SERVPRO Guelph, your partner in disaster restoration...

The last thing anyone wants to deal with is a disaster to their home or property. SERVPRO of Guelph understands it can create unwanted stress when it comes to choosing a restoration company. In an effort to help offset that stress you can feel, here are a few things to be on the lookout when choosing a company to restore your home or office after a disaster:

  • Trained and Certified by the IICRC
    • The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Company) sets the standard in the disaster restoration industry. Choosing a company that has been trained and certified by the IICRC ensures you are working with professionals who truly know what they’re doing.
  • Response Time
    • Disasters rarely happen on the clock. This means you need a restoration company that is always available to help whether it is on a weekend, holiday, or even during pandemic shutdowns. It’s important to choose a company that is always open. SERVPRO not only remained open during the shutdown, but we also assisted other essential businesses in keeping their doors open and employees safe by providing proactive disinfection services. We pride ourselves in not only always being open but also being faster to any size disaster.
  • Manpower
    • Major storm events can place a huge strain on restoration companies as they try to help their communities put the pieces of “normal life” back together. If the company isn’t adequately scaled to deal with the needs of their customers, this could result in job delays and cause even more damage than the storm itself. When that happens, instead of trusting out-of-town storm chasers who are here today and gone tomorrow, it’s critical to be able to count on your local disaster restoration company to answer your call among the dozens or hundreds of others that come in as a result of these storms. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Guelph is not only capable of dealing with the needs of our customers in the territories we serve, but at our disposal are 1700+ franchises that are able to work together to serve our customers following large-scale disasters.

The aftermath of these events, though shocking, does not have to be stressful. Whether its water, fire, or storm damage, the result of these disasters require the attention of a professional and trustworthy disaster restoration company, a company such as SERVPRO.

Choose the Right Restoration Company for Your Home

6/11/2022 (Permalink)

Unexpected home damage is always a shock for homeowners. It can be difficult to determine what to do next or how to react in the moment.

That is why, we always recommend that homeowners plan ahead for these types of situations, so if the damage occurs, they’ll know immediately who to call. But how do you know you’re choosing the right restoration company?

There is a lot of information surrounding the restoration industry, so it is important to narrow it down by determining what is actually important. Here are some key points to consider when making your choice:

Their Areas of Expertise

It is not uncommon for home damages to require more than one aspect of restoration. For example, cleaning up fire damage involves ridding the air of toxic particles and water damage often involves restoring structures. SERVPRO of Guelph is certified and experienced in all aspects of damage, making us the forefront leader in making sure all of your needs are met and exceeded, from start to finish.

Night and Weekend Availability

Damages have a knack for occurring at the most inconvenient times, so it is important to pick a company that will be there whenever you call. Because we have a 247 emergency line, we are able to guarantee we’ll always be there when you need us.

Level of Training

It is important for a company to invest in the training of their technicians to guarantee they will be prepared for any damage situation that arises. The restoration industry has high standards for training, which is what we use as our guideline for all educational materials.

Ability to Scale

Because we are a local franchise with a massive network of 1700 other locations in North America alone, SERVPRO of Guelph can scale as needed for larger disasters. This ensures that we can treat a single-home fire with the same level of care as we would a city-wide disaster; providing exceptional service in both cases.

If you have experienced storm damage, we are always here to help! Call our restoration experts 24/7  so we can address your damages quickly and restore your home or business to preloss condition!

Surviving an Unexpected Flood...

SERVPRO Storm and Commercial Restoration Storm Damage Tips

We live in a world where mother nature has a mind of her own at times, and natural disaster can strike at anytime and can ruin the "normalcy" of the life we once had. The nice furniture, flooring, and decor that once occupied our home, now washed away by water. Whether the flooding that has occurred in your home was because of a pipe bursting, a sewer backup, faulty appliance, a heavy rain or even rising floodwaters, there are important steps you should take in order to keep you and your family safe.

After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety:

  • Is it safe to stay in the house?
  • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

You and your family may not even be thinking about flooding, but rather tornado damage or hurricane damage. But with any severe storm or rain there is always a chance of flooding. Here at SERVPRO® of Guelph we want you to be as prepared and safe as possible, therefore we put together some do and don'ts to put into practice after you have encountered flooding within your home.

What To Do After Flooding

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

 Reminders:

  1. Do not panic, take a breath and understand that although today feels like the worst day ever. Things WILL get better.
  2. Keep safety always at the forefront of your mind (stop the water source, shut all electricity off, etc.)
  3. Call SERVPRO in order to get things clean, dry and back to beautiful as quickly as possible.

  • 24-Hour Emergency Service
  • Faster to Any Size Disaster
  • Highly Trained Water Restoration Technicians
  • A Trusted Leader in the Water Restoration Industry

  • Advanced Water Inspection, Extraction, and Drying Equipment

What Does IICRC mean for your Commercial Facility?

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Guelph is an IICRC firm. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

  • Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
  • Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
  • Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
  • Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Fire Pit Safety Tips!

Fire Damage Guelph SERVPRO of Guelph Fire Pit Safety Tips

This time of year is one of the best because it is time to break out the fire pits. We know it's great to be around the backyard during the warmer months. Burgers on the grill, drinks in hand, and some background music is a sure way to have everyone in a good mood. Here is some quick and simple fire pit safety tips to keep the fire bright and the mood light:

  1. Clear all flammable materials away from your fire pit. Make sure it’s kept 10 feet away from the home or building.
  2. Pile dirt or rocks to keep the fire on the ground from escaping
  3. Before lighting your fire, check the wind direction. If it’s too windy, do not light your fire pit as the wind can cause the flames to travel.
  4. Contrary to popular belief, lighting fluid is not safe for lighting a fire pit. Use a commercial fire starter kick with kindling on top.
  5. Once the fire pit is lit, never leave it unattended and never leave children or pets near the fire pit without adult supervision.
  6. Avoid  softwoods like pine or cedar to prevent flying sparks and flame “pops”,
  7. Only put enough fuel to keep the fire burning gently to prevent flare-ups and uncontrollable flames.
  8. To extinguish the flames, use water to drown out the fire and stir it with a shovel to make sure it’s fully extinguished. Use the shovel to extinguish any escaped flames as well
  9. Dispose of the ashes in a metal can use only for fire pit ash storage. Careful, even after a few days the ashes are still hot enough to cause a fire.
  10. Accidents happen, even with the correct preventative measures taken. Having a fire extinguisher nearby can greatly reduce the risk of the fire getting out of control.

How Our Experts Handel Fire Damage In Your Home or Business

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Guelph Fire Cleanup SERVPRO Guelph working to make it "Like it never even happened."

The flames from a fire of any size can create dangerous conditions in your house quickly by damaging furniture, cabinets, countertops, tiles, and appliances in minutes. After extinguishing a fire successfully, the amount of destruction left to handle can be overwhelming. Therefore, it is vital to use fire restoration services to return your property to its pre-fire damage condition.

After a fire damages your property, soot and smoke can travel and penetrate other rooms, ruining carpeting, paint, upholstery, clothing, draperies, and other belongings. Ventilating your house is a vital first step to cleaning up after a fire. You can start the remediation process by taking the following steps:

• Wear gloves like household dishwashing gloves, pants, and long-sleeved shirts before cleaning up the surfaces with soot and smoke residues to avoid skin contact.
• Wear personal protective gear like a dust mask to avoid breathing in airborne particles such as ash.
• Ventilate your property by opening the windows and doors to eliminate odor and smoke.
• Dispose of burned debris to eliminate scents.
• Use cooking oil to wipe metallic finishes preventing staining and rusting.

You should also not hesitate to seek help from SERVPRO of Guelph professionals. Our restoration team has expansive training in dealing with fire damage. We understand that the destruction may be more severe than it appears and we know where to check to prevent the need for future restoration services.

Our Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians (FSRT) can arrive at your house within an hour of receiving your call and assess the damage. This allows us to determine the fire restoration services required and then work diligently to restore your property. We have the tools and equipment needed to remove soot and smoke from your property. Smoke and soot can cause stains and discoloration on walls and ceilings. The acidic residues in soot can ruin the interior of your property and countless belongings if you do not eliminate them it rapidly.

Our technicians can loosen smoke residues from different surfaces using mild, moderate, or heavy agitation. For mild agitation, we can use brushes, vacuums, feather dusters, or compressed air. For moderate agitation, we can use dusting cloths, dry cleaning sponges, or cleaning towels. If your house has a significant amount of smoke residues, our crew can remove them using tools that produce heavy amounts of agitation like Roto pads and brushes, sandpapers and steel wool, and blasting equipment that blasts some type of media against the soiled surfaces.

Your property could also have water damage because of burst pipes or the water that firefighters used to stifle the flames. Our SERVPRO technicians can extract the water using shop vacs and dry the affected areas using air moving and dehumidification equipment.

When a fire happens in your home, call the team of highly trained technicians at SERVPRO of Guelph for fire restoration services. You can reach us at (519) 837-8787. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Winter Water Damage

1/16/2022 (Permalink)

Winter Water Damage Guelph SERVPRO of Guelph, Here to Help!

Canadian winters are known to be extremely cold with large amounts of snow and ice expected. Having below freezing temperatures, Snow, and ice, your home or business could be in jeopardy for water damage. It is crucial that you are aware of the hazards and can prepare, prevent or act quickly if faced with winter water damage.

FROZEN PIPES

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your
property if not addressed quickly.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas.

PREPARE YOUR HOME

  • If you own a home which is unoccupied during a cold period, ensure you have ample heating fuel and that the indoor thermostat, in all areas of the home, is minimally kept at 55 degrees and ensure that you have a trusted person check the home periodically during your absence.
  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off .”
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.

PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause
    personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.

Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your home or business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. Our team has the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather. If disaster strikes your home or business during the winter months, know that SERVPRO has your back.

How Vital is Professional Water Removal?

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Before and After water Damage Before and After Water Damage

Water loss incidents occurring in residential and commercial settings always have the potential to get out of control without the right actions occurring quickly. As much as the average homeowner would like to save their time and money, affording professional restoration services, this is often the most credible solution to the situation. Still, for actions like extraction and water removal, how vital is it to seek out the expertise and advanced equipment of restoration professionals?

Knowing what you need for water removal in your property starts with discovering the answers to three key questions:

How severe is the current damage?
What types of materials have become exposed to standing water?
Can someone else do this faster and more thoroughly to better protect my property?

Knowing the severity of the situation you face can help you to quickly determine whether it is within your skill set to restore. Often water removal tools available to homeowners have limited strength, so widespread saturation can be too much for portable wet-vacs or even submersible pumps. Equipment from a broader inventory, like our SERVPRO professionals can access, can address standing water promptly throughout every affected area of the property.

Secondly, you need to understand where the water damage has spread and what materials have become affected by the standing water. There are specialized tools certified technicians can use that can help to remove water and saturation from carpeting, authentic hardwood flooring, drywall, and even concrete board underneath tile.

Conceding a situation is beyond your resources and skills to help can be a challenge for many homeowners, especially those accustomed to handling problems on their property as it arises. Our SERVPRO professionals can help with a thorough evaluation to walk you through what actions can fully restore your property and get things back to normal quickly.

Gaining an understanding of the emergency in your house can help you to quickly decide if our SERVPRO of Guelph rapid response team can help. No matter the source or the severity, our full-service approach to water loss recovery can make these situations “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (519) 837-8787

Specialized Dehumidification and Drying Equipment

After the water has been extracted and removed from the damaged area, we will begin the drying and dehumidification process. We use specialized equipment and industrial-grade dehumidifiers to help prevent water damage such as swelling and warping of floors, walls and furniture. Using room measurements, temperature and relative humidity readings, we will determine the type of equipment to use and will track the drying process using specialized monitoring equipment.

Got Mould?

Mould Damage and Remediation Mould Damage and Remediation

Around this time of year, high heat and heavy rain can make it unbearable to be outside; but it can also cause problems indoors. The combination of heat and moisture, along with poor circulation or ventilation can create an environment perfect for mould to grow. Mould is present almost everywhere indoors and outdoors, but when it has a water source (like moisture from water damage or from excessive humidity) it can grow and get out of hand. When mould has water available and grows, it becomes more visible, can spread to other areas in your home or business, and can produce health effects. Some signs that mould could be growing in your home include: visible mould, musty odors, and a higher humidity.

If you notice any of these signs, give us a call at (519)837-8787 and SERVPRO of Guelph will make "Like it never even happened."

Effective water removal methods are key to restoring items after a water event. Professional services are required when you need the job to be done in the right way. It ensures your home and property is left both clean and dry. This article addresses some of the concerns that property owners in Guelph experience when such incidents happen.

The equipment that our SERVPRO technicians use when performing water removal procedures makes the difference. Water removal is the first step we perform when we start performing restoration procedures. We have to look at the depth of the standing water and whether the site is accessible or not. We use portable water extractors when removing water from an area that does not have enough space to place massive water extraction tools such as truck-mounted water extractors.

When water remains in place for some time, some parts of the structure such as walls and their insulation are likely to be affected. We can use moisture meters to determine the content of moisture in the waters. Normally, we have non-penetrating and penetrating moisture meters. Our SERVPRO technicians have the skills of determining the right tools to use. If the structure is adversely affected, we may go ahead and remove the baseboards. After removing them, venting the walls cavities is possible as part of the restoration process.

It is the work of SERVPRO technicians to inspect the insulation of your property. The insulation power lessens, and some can be matted after the water event - which occurs in most porous insulation. Though it is possible to restore fiberglass insulation, it is not always the case. We check whether the level of the water is above the sill plate before making appropriate restoration measures. Our experts have done this before, and we know the challenges we need to overcome when doing this work.

SERVPRO of Guelph is ready to help you perform proper water removal in your home. Our skilled technicians are highly trained, and we use the state of art equipment to do the work. Call us today at (519) 837-8787 for quality services.

Is Your Sewer Drain Blocked?

5/28/2021 (Permalink)

Backed up sewers can cause thousands of dollars in damage to floors, electrical systems, walls, etc. Learn about the most common causes of sewer backups, and what you as a commercial property owner can do urge your residents or your co-workers of steps to take to ensure there are no sewer line. Be aware of these four things that may be an indicator you have a sewer problem.

Odors:

Be aware of any odor around drains. If after clearing a clog you smell sewer gas, you may want to call a plumber for an inspection, as strong sewer smells can be an indicator of issues further in the line.

Clogged Drains :

A blocked sewer will not only cause unpleasant odors to occur in your building, but the blocked pipe can also cause frequent clogging of your drains and toilets. This problem may also cause sewer backups into your facility.

Indentations in Landscaping:

Also, while you may not have any clogging issues, it is still possible that your sewer lines have failed. Pipe breaks may cause indentations in your landscaping, like divots in the lawn. If the break is severe enough, it is possible that sewage is leaking into the grounds of your property. Eventually, this can also lead to a sewage backup in your building.

Deformations in Landscaping:

In addition to indentations in the lawn, you may notice perpetual puddling in certain areas. You may also see that areas of your parking lot have sunken or cracked along with sidewalks. Depending on how close the break is to your building, you may even notice cracks in the foundation. These issues often require the expertise of a disaster restoration specialist to resolve, which depending on your insurance policy may be covered. Be proactive! Here are two things to do on a day to day basis to ensure there are no sewer problems for you and your commercial property.

  • Properly dispose of grease.

Cooking oil should never go into the drain. You should let the grease cool off and then dispose of in the garbage can.

  • Properly dispose of paper products.

Paper towels, feminine hygiene products, cloth diapers, and hygienic wipes, etc. do not deteriorate quickly and can become a major problem.

Fire Pit Safety Tips!

Summer Fire Safety Fire Pit Tips and Tricks from SERVPRO of Guelph

Holiday Fire Safety

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

Stay Safe this Holiday Season! Stay Safe This Holiday Season!

It’s that time of year where we are all full of Christmas cheer! Even though the holidays are a bit different this year, safety is still a must. Christmas decorations are what help make the season bright, but they also present fire risks that can turn into a holiday disaster.

Here are holiday fire facts by the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in almost half of home Christmas tree fires.
  • More than two of every five (42%) home Christmas tree fires started in the living room. Five percent were chimney or flue fires. One-fifth (21%) of the decoration fires started in the kitchen. Sixteen percent started in the living room, family room or den.
  • Half (51%) of December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to one-third (32%) in January to November.
  • Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in almost half (45%) of home Christmas tree fires.
  • More than one-fifth (22%) of the Christmas tree fires, some type of heat source, such as a candle or equipment, was too close to the tree.

SERVPRO Holiday Safety Tips:

  • Check wiring on lights for breaks and wear. Replace worn strings and don’t exceed manufacturer guidelines for connecting multiple strands of lights. Don’t leave tree lights plugged in when you are away from home or when you go to bed.
  • Keep live trees well-watered to reduce the chance of a fire.
  • Use flameless candles. If you do use traditional candles, burn them in sturdy candleholders, well away from drapes and other flammable materials, and never leave them unattended or allow them to burn down to less than one inch in length.
  • Keep all decorations away from heat sources like radiators, portable heaters, fireplaces, etc.

It only takes a moment’s distraction or carelessness to turn a holiday celebration into a catastrophe. We hope these tips will be a reminder to families everywhere to make fire prevention a priority in their holiday preparations, so they can spend the season enjoying family and friends, not dealing with the aftermath of a fire.

Winter Water Damage

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

Help Protect Yourself This Winter Help Protect Yourself This Winter

We Are the Fire, Smoke and Soot Experts!

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Very invasive, smoke and soot are able to penetrate various areas within your home causing hidden damage and odor.  Using our smoke damage, we will inspect and assess the extent of the damage to develop a plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around pipes, seeping through the holes used by the pipes to travel from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.  Did you know that there are different types of smoke?

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry.  Which means, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Guelph will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Barret and Keith by SERVPRO trailer SERVPRO Guelph is honored to support great organizations

This past hockey season, SERVPRO of Guelph’s, Barret Kirwin was able to put up 59 points, 30 goals and 29 assists, with the Owen Sound Attack. SERVPRO of Guelph has donated $10 per point to two charities that Barret is involved with. We are honoured to partner with Barret and donate $590.00 to each charity on his behalf. Garret was the former captain of the Guelph Storm and played from 2013-2018.  SERVPRO of Guelph would like to thank everyone involved and can’t wait to see what Barret can do next season!

Got Mold?

8/12/2020 (Permalink)

TIP: to help prevent mold growth indoors, keep your humidity below 45 percent! TIP: to help prevent mold growth indoors, keep your humidity below 45 percent!

Around this time of year, high heat and heavy rain can make it unbearable to be outside; but it can also cause problems indoors. The combination of heat and moisture, along with poor circulation or ventilation can create an environment perfect for mold to grow. Mold is present almost everywhere indoors and outdoors, but when it has a water source (like moisture from water damage or from excessive humidity) it can grow and get out of hand. When mold has water available and grows, it becomes more visible, can spread to other areas in your home or business, and can produce allergens and irritants. Some signs that mold could be growing in your home include: visible mold, musty odors, and a higher humidity.

If you notice any of these signs, give us a call at (519)837-8787 and SERVPRO of Guelph will make "Like it never even happened."

  • Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage channels, and other areas known to flood suddenly.

Have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

Our Team at SERVPRO® of Guelph would like to offer our warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season and a new year of Health, Happiness and Prosperity.

As we enter the Holiday's we would like to share some safety tips for the season.

Christmas trees

  • If buying a real Christmas tree, make sure it’s fresh—a freshly cut tree is less of a fire hazard.
  • You can test for freshness by tapping the butt of the tree on the ground; if fresh, very few needles should fall off.
  • Place the tree in a stand that will hold two to three litres of water and top it up daily.
  • Do not set your tree up near a heat source such as a radiator, television, fireplace, heating duct or sunny window. Do not block doors or windows.
  • Remove the tree within 10 to 14 days. After that amount of time in a heated building, even the freshest tree can start to dry out. Watch for needles to start falling off—then it is time to discard the tree.

Tree lights and decorations

  • Use lights that are Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved.
  • Check for and discard frayed, broken and exposed wires.
  • Replace any damaged or burnt-out lights with energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Use the proper lights for the environment. Indoor light strings/sets should not be used outdoors because they lack weatherproof connections. Some outdoor light strings/sets burn too hot indoors.
  • Use caution with decorations—use flame-retardant, non-combustible, non-conductive decorations.
  • Never use lighted candles on the tree.
  • Remember turn off all tree or display lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

Candles

  • Place candles away from anything that could catch fire.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Burn candles only when a responsible adult is overseeing the flame.
  • Put candles in sturdy holders on a stable surface, well away from drafts, curtains, children and pets.
  • Snuff them out before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Fireplace

  • Never burn gift wrappings, boxes, cartons, or other types of packing in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate too much heat.
  • Don’t hang Christmas stockings from the mantel when the fireplace is in use.
  • Never leave the fire unattended or let it smoulder.
  • Clean the ashes regularly. Place the ashes in a metal container and store outside away from flammable materials.
  • Don’t use Christmas trees for firewood.

Electrical considerations

  • There is often a tendency to overload wall outlets during the holiday season. This is an unsafe practice and should be avoided even for short durations.
  • Inspect all cords before using. Make sure they are Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certified. Look for loose connections or frayed or exposed wire. Discard any defective cords. Read the labels and manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper use.
  • Insert plugs fully into outlets. Poor contact may cause overheating or shock.
  • To avoid possible overheating, do not coil or bunch an extension cord which is in use and do not run it under carpets or rugs.

Kitchen/cooking

  • When doing your holiday cooking, never leave the kitchen unattended.
  • Prevent a fire from occurring; turn off the stove when you leave the kitchen, even if it is only for a few minutes.
  • Wear tight-fitting or rolled-up sleeves when cooking and keep all combustible materials a safe distance from the stove.
  • Grease and fat fires are a leading cause of home fires in Canada, so be extra careful when doing this kind of cooking. Here’s what to do if grease in a pot or pan catches fire:
    • Smother the flames by covering the pan with a lid
    • Turn off the heat immediately
    • Use baking soda (flour can be explosive) on shallow grease fires
    • Never turn on the overhead fan, as this could spread the fire
    • Never throw water on a grease fire
